Winter walks—a series

You probably wouldn’t know it based on my ‘output’, but I have a camera with me pretty much all the time. I’ll briefly join the chorus singing the praises of the Fujifilm X100V—this is absolutely my go anywhere camera. I shoot every day, but since I’ve backed away from social media in the past couple of years, I don’t share as often. This creates a bit of a dilemma, because sharing the work is actually a part of the process which I really enjoy. I’ve been meaning to blog more frequently, but intentions do not equal actions. Anyway, here we are. I’ve been thinking that I could pull off smaller blog posts, maybe just detailing a walk or a weekend, in addition to the odd larger thematic post.

In that spirit, I present some photos taken during a wander earlier this week. I needed to take my car in for some routine maintenance, and I am always excited to go to a new area and explore through the lens. Being that the area was dense with auto dealerships and repair shops, it is perhaps unsurprising that I came across a beautiful car in beautiful light, basically screaming to be captured.

I wouldn’t say I’m a car guy by any means, but I can appreciate an attractive piece of machinery as much as anyone. There are a lot of nice cars here, but I don’t see many muscle cars, which is one of the reasons this one stood out.

This is, by my eye, a second generation Plymouth Road Runner, produced from 1971-74. In one of my favorite colors to boot.

For the curious, these are JPGs processed in X Raw Studio with the Velvia film simulation and some further tweaks to the settings. I cannot do the colors any more justice on my own; they just look perfect with this sim.

Moving along, and seeking shelter from the rain, I was drawn to The Amazing Brentwood, an indoor/outdoor mall in the Burnaby neighborhood of Brentwood. While the mall itself was mostly empty and seemed to be under development, the exterior was a treat of lines and reflections. The sun managed to fight its way through the clouds for a few minutes, long enough for me to spring in to action and capture some high-contrast black and white. I have been shooting primarily monochrome for the past month or two—I find it very well suited for the low angle of light we get in the winter, which creates some compelling contrast of light and shadow.

Now with UMBRELLA.

Let’s get liminal.

Always looking for interesting reflections.

I’ll wrap this up with one more pop of color, and a promise (to myself) to be back soon. I have so many photos to share from the summer, as well as from the past few weeks of winter light.
